Here at AJP Skip Hire, we’re much more than just a waste collection service. We also love and encourage recycling, because preserving the ecosystem is important to us.
That’s why this summer; we encourage you to introduce your children to the three R’s of recycling: reduce, reuse, and recycle, so they can get into the habit now and be environmentally conscious when they’re adults. We all have a role to play in taking care of our planet. You’re never too young to start learning about the environment, so the best time to start teaching your kids about the importance of recycling is right now!
Here are some simple steps you and your kids can do together:
Explain the Importance of Recycling
Firstly, you should take the time to explain the importance of recycling to your children. Help them to understand how they can help to protect the environment by following the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Talk together about why we should recycle and encourage them to think about the recycling process. Don’t worry if you don’t know the answers – find out together as this might encourage you both to be more mindful of waste.
Practice What You Preach
While it’s great that you’ve talked to your kids about how important recycling is, it is important that you practice what you preach. Parents are powerful role models and children look up to them and imitate their behaviour, so if you want to encourage your kids to start recycling, you need to do it too. If you don’t, your efforts will be wasted as they will quickly give up if they see that you don’t recycle.
Make it Easy
You should aim to make it as easy as possible for your kids to recycle. Make sure the bins are easily accessible and colour-match them with the outdoor bins. This will help everyone identify the correct bins and make recycling effortless. Children also love having responsibilities as it makes them feel grown-up and important, so why not assign them a recycling duty like collecting paper and putting it in the right bin.
Have Fun with It
One of our key tips is to try and make recycling as fun as possible for your kids! If you present it as another chore, they will become bored quickly and will give up. Why not turn it into a fun game like giving a prize to the person who recycles the most items each week? Let your imagination run wild and create an exciting game that will make recycling fun!
And back to the three R´s of recycling, here are some simple examples of how you can easily implement recycling to your home right now:
- Start a compost pile in your backyard so that your food waste can be repurposed as fertiliser.
- When your children go with you to the grocery store, show them that you stay away from buying styrofoam and single-serve products.
- Also cut down on plastic and paper.
The more things you throw away, the more material you’re putting in landfills. You should only throw things away as a last resort; if something can be salvaged or repurposed, keep it.
- If one of your child’s toys is broken, try to fix it instead of putting it right in the trash.
- When your child outgrows their clothing, donate it to a charity instead of throwing it away.
- Instead of using plastic bags, get a few reusable bags.
No matter how hard you try, you probably can’t stop buying disposable items entirely. You’re going to keep buying things like cereal in cardboard boxes and beverages in plastic and glass containers, and that’s okay as long as you prevent these materials from going to waste. This is easily done by recycling.
Here at At AJP Skip Hire, we operate a zero to landfill service. You will be surprised on what we can recycle. From paper, cardboard, timber and construction through to plastic, white goods and anything else electrical: take a look at our recycling page for more details – recycling in London
